Distribution of Salmonella in Chonnam Area

Abstract
The author tried to detect Salmonella carriers among 6,875 persons living in Chonnam area who were randomly-selected food handlers and students, etc., during the period from Feb. 1973 through Feb. 1975.
Sixteen strains of Salmonella isolated from stool of healthy carriers were screened for resistance to antimicrobial agents and R factors.
Among 6,875 individuals investigated, 12(0.18%) were detected as typhoid carriers, and each one as carrier of S. typhimurium, S. paratyphi B, S. senftenberg and S. choleraesuis, respectively, indicating the carrier rate of Salmonella was 0.23% (16 persons).
The carrier rate of Kwangju 0.18% and that of Damyang 0.29%.
Of 16 strains isolated, 8 strains(50%) were resistant to one or more of antibiotics such as streptomycin(SM), tetracycline(TC), ampicillin(AP), and chloramphenicol(CP); resistant to SM were 8 strains, to TC 2 strains, to AP 2 strains, to CP 1 strain, and to KM 1 strain. None of the strains were resistant to CB and NA.
Among 8 resistant strains, 4 strains(50%) carried R factors such as (SM)^(r), (SM TC)^(r), and (SM TC AP)^(r).
